I have a client, which is a regular, does not wash his hair or dont know if he has a hygiene preference, but it kills me when I cut his hair. It is hard for me to see what I am doing because of the dirt and dandruff in his hair. How can you tell them this (which they should know) to clean their hair before a cut?

You have put in the work for years building clientèle, you have saved money, and you have that entrepreneurial spirit run through your body. When is it time to strike out on your own? Oh, but I may fail, I have never done it before, what if I am just meant to work for someone else? These are definitely questions that will run through your mind. It is hard for any type of business to stay afloat in this economy much less a salon or barbershop. But there are people right now who have taken the leap of faith and trusted their instincts and good judgement to control their own destiny and step out on their own. It can be scary. More responsibilities and to be responsible for, but people are doing it right now on their own.

When do you think its time to step out on your own? Please post your comments. Ron, I know you can speak on experience and others too.

With every profession, there has to be a time when growth must occur in order to migrate with the times. In our industry, that is true to a certain extent, but to be honest, it seems like people are still doing things the same way. I mean, if it works, don't fix it. But what happens when things break and you aren't able to fix it immediately. What happens when the clients don't come in the door like they use to or when potential walk-ins just 'walk by'? Do you quit? No. But at that time, people must look at how things are going and find ways to grow.

What are ways you have grown in your career when things didn't go the way you wanted to? Where are some ways the industry can grow as a whole? Or has the industry grown in the last 20 years? Comments please...

What is your best triple threat tools in the shop? I honestly for now while I am getting my skills back tight are: The Oster Fast Feeds, Andis T-Outliners, and my Wahl balding. Sometimes I use some cheap Conairs. I started, when I was an apprentice in the shop with some Cheap Andis home clippers, then when I came in I got some Andis Masters I did not take care of them at all, and I knew I wasted my money at that time. I will not do that again.

During my operation of my first Business from 2001-2007 I worked 6-7 days a week with unlimited hours and if I got a phone call once I left the shop I would turn around and come back....I got so burned out that I bacame frustrated because I over worked myself and I felt obligated to be what I considered LOYAL to my customers....I learned that if you dont respect your own time/hours that there is no way others will ! I Walked away from Creative Touch in April of 2007 2009/2010 I opened a brand new shop "Classic Kuts" in a different City and built an all new Clientel with an All new mindset. Closed Sun/Mon Tues/Wed 9am-6pm,Thur/Fri 9am-7pm and Sat 7am-4pm...I stick completely to my hours now and my business has prospered and customers are forced to respect my hours or Find somewhere else to take their business because I dont need it ! I have been professionally AGGRESSIVE with customers who try and Buck the system but just like in relationships people cant stand rejection so they fall in place and act right.I work about 47-50hrs per week If they cant see me with in those hours "I DONT NEED THEM AS CUSTOMERS" These Are My Hours And IM Sticking To Them !

Last jan. 2009 I was working as a staffing coordinator on a 9-5 job . The job was cool because I had my on office, dressed up daily and worked around plenty of pretty women and I had the coolest female Boss you could have but one day she came to work and turned in her 2wks notice....from that point on I got a new boss and my job became HELL...I immediately started looking for a building to buy so I could go back into business for myself because I knew that I couldnt work for this new Boss ! By June 1st I spotted my building, by june 19th I had closed on the building....at this point I would work my 9-5 job, then come work on the shop from 5pm-until,go work a 12a-8a nightshift job, then come back the next morning and doitall over again. By August I opened the doors on Classic Kuts which meant...I was working a 40hr 9-5 job then cutting hair from 5p-10p or 11p and Sat 8am-10pm and also working the 12a-8a 40hrs per wk ! On the average I would be working a total of about 120+hrs per wk.I worked 3 jobs from Feb 2009 to feb 2010 and from that point I worked a full time 9-5 and the shop from 5p-until..My Goal was to get my shop the way I wanted it,build full time clientel basically in partime hours and then quit all of the other jobs by june 1st 2010....I accomplished this by May 5th 2010..All of the hours that I put in was worth it and now Im finally working my shop Full time with no other jobs what so ever "AWESOME"! I have this female customer who is very religious and she told me once in conversation that "In Life the reward Is GREATER than the Sacrifice" Thats Real Talk!

The time and effort that you put into your work accounts for the return that you get back. You can rush through your clients and do 100's of heads but if only a few come back you didnt invest in yourself.Take time to realize that quality is residual income and quantity is for the moment. I have had customers leave my shop because they didnt wanna wait on 2 or 3 heads before them but return to me the next week and will wait 10 heads for me to fix what somone else messed up.Im giving a minimum of 20mins per head even if it only takes 10mins because my work represents me.When its necessary forme to cut faster or just fast im more than capable of doing so.
My First business was called Creative Touch which was very successful from 2001-2007 we maxed out at 12 barbers/stylist. I moved into a much bigger building to hold more barbers and stylist and would max out at 30 barbers/stylist. By the time I got to 15 people egos, atitudes, personalities and just unhappy people made me regret doing so. In 2009 I started Classic Kuts which comfortably holds 3 barbers or myself another barber and stylist and I am in the middle of expanding again extending the building out 12ft only this time its to hold more customers. Smaller is so much more rewarding for me
