International Hair Show.

The producers putting together a reality show about fantasy hair gave him a call to be a judge. He said yes. So he flew out to Los Angeles for the six-week shoot to pare down 10 fantasy hair competitors from around the country. He also provides some mentoring a la Tim Gunn.

“It was definitely different being on the judge’s side as opposed to being a competitor,” said Derek J, who runs a Buckhead salon the J Spot, which just moved last week to 314 Buckhead Ave. with 12 hair stylists. He said he has won more than 20 competitions over the past seven years.

As millions of gallons of oil float toward the Gulf Coast, hair salons and dog groomers from our community have been busy packaging and shipping their own renewable resource to help contain it… hair.
Hair, as it turns out, is an efficient and abundant material for collecting and containing petroleum spills.

Jarbas Godoy, owner of The Dog from Ipanema in South Miami, started sending clean hair clippings one week after the oil spill in order support the efforts of Matter of Trust, a San Francisco environmental charity that first started collecting hair 10 years ago to help clean up a series of small spills.
"I found out about this effort from other groomers on my Facebook page and knew I wanted to help out," said Godoy. "We've been sending a full box of hair each week to a donated warehouse space in Marathon, Florida."

Read more: http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/07/13/1728429/local-salons-and-groomers-pitch.html#ixzz0uECW1dO0

My dilema here is that I have been laid off from work since August, and for years have been thinking about getting into the barber profession. As a woman, I go back and forth as to whether or not it is the appropriate industry for me to pursue.

I checked out the Massachusetts Barbering School in Quincy, Massachusetts back in November, and was put on the waiting list for a June 1st start. But of course, as my life always goes... feast or famine. Yesterday, I was offered a job and now am on the fence as to what the heck I should do now. Of course, I need to let them know by today or tomorrow if I am going to take it.

I am wondering if you could give me some insight as to the benefits you see being a barber. Potential earnings, etc.. any and every piece of information you are willing and have the time to provide, I would be so greatful.

I am trying to choose between something I would be excited to do for work everyday, barbering, and a job that would gaurantee things like salary, vacation time etc., but wont necessarliy be fulfilling day in and day out.

I know it takes time to build up, but the problem is I have no support, and I have no steady income.

Well I have come to a decision to get a full time job and only work in a salon on Saturdays (if the owner will agree to that, and hope she'd let me work on Sundays, too.) If she does not, then I will have to just do that on my own, part time.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
