Well I have come to a decision to get a full time job and only work in a salon on Saturdays (if the owner will agree to that, and hope she'd let me work on Sundays, too.) If she does not, then I will have to just do that on my own, part time.

Paulette Moore-Luton warned her cousin not to cut too much of her hair off.



Moore-Luton wears her hair natural in a short Afro.



"I'm getting ready to get braids," she said to her cousin, La'Mona Sow, a hairstylist in Jackson.



Moore-Luton has worn her hair in all kinds of styles from cornrows and twists to a weave ponytail.



"I like to mix it up," she said.



In the new documentary film, "Good Hair," comedian Chris Rock explores black women's hair: the naturals, relaxers, weaves and wigs. He visits beauty salons across the country to talk to black women about their hairstyles and discuss the term of good hair in the black community.



Sow, who will open her own hair salon this week in Jackson, said good hair is healthy hair, but not all blacks think this. She's been a hairstylist for 19 years.



"Some black people think good hair is straight hair - hair that's not nappy and kinky," Sow said. "This is why a lot of them don't want to wear their natural hair."



Most black women's natural hair has a thick texture that's kind of kinky, she said.



Some of "our kids don't want to wear their hair natural because they think it's bad hair. They want long hair, the kind that swings," Sow said.



In "Good Hair," Rock reveals he was inspired to make the film because his daughter once asked him, 'Why don't I have good hair?'



Like black women, some little black girls think good hair means having a weave or a relaxer, a strong chemical made of sodium hydroxide that straightens hair.



Relaxers, some of which contain lye, can damage the scalp if not used correctly, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.



Sow won't apply a relaxer to a child who's 9 years old or younger.



"At that age, they don't need those chemicals in their hair because it's too strong for them," Sow said.



Just like relaxers, weaves can be damaging. Sow has seen black girls as young as 5 with weave ponytails in their hair. One of the girls cried when Sow took her weave out.



"That's just laziness on the parent's part," Sow said. "They say their child's hair is nappy, but they just don't want to do it. The parents are teaching their children that in order for their hair to look good, they have to have a weave or a relaxer when there's nothing wrong with our natural hair."



When Moore-Luton was a child, she was teased because her hair wouldn't grow.



"My grandma got tired of people talking about me, so she went and made some type of concoction to help my hair grow," Moore-Luton said. "She would grease my scalp, too. Then my hair began to grow."



People who Moore-Luton knew began to tell her she had good hair because it was thick and long with a natural curl.



"Some of them would say, 'You don't have black people's hair because our hair doesn't just curl up like that,'" Moore-Luton said.



When she cut her hair off to get rid of the relaxer and go natural, people were shocked because in the black community, hair is a woman's crown and glory, Moore-Luton said.



But she thinks her short natural 'do makes her stand out more.



Now, her 18-year-old daughter, Alexandra Hill, wants to wear her hair natural.



"It's beautiful," Hill said. "I think wearing your hair natural brings out your complexion and for some people, it makes them smile more.
