Well I will say this going into booth rental is good but there are alot of things you have to think about like....

Can you come up with the rent every week?

Do you have reliable clients reg. and walk-in

Is this area that Im going to work for do they have a good walk in.

Now dont get me wrong it good to booth rent shoot pocketing your own money but remember you have to advertis your but off you are your own boss

So much success if you just coming out or school my thought on that is work at a place that you know you will always get money with or without clients (JC Penny, Sears, Smart Style, Supa Cuts) until you build up that clientel, you know.

So much SUCCESS!!Smile

Thanks 4 the reply Justice the problem is that Im just getting back behind the chair after a 3year leave. (nasty divorceCry) Im now in a place where I dont have to worry so much about money and I can afford to not have a consistint pay check.BUT Im concered about putting a large amount of $$ in and It not working out. The salon I'm looking at is great but not alot of walk-ins I would def. have to get my own cust.  I dont know how long to expect before I have a good list of customers?

I did work in an upscale salon out of school but I was SOOOO scared to cut so I went to a very high volume Super cuts I loved it and leared alot. I also had a good client list when I left. I have moved and the SC around here has a really bad rep.

I feel really lost and to be honest realy far behind. Trying to keep motavatied.

Any advice is good advice at this point!!

Start with www.vistaprint.com.  Hella cheap business cards.

Then, publish yourself a hair magazine. You may not be able to just yet, but when you're ready for the next issue, go to www.quintessencemagazine.com.

I think that renting space is a great idea, if the location is right.  If you are in a shop without great traffic, then you really want to get your clientele built first.  I now own a barbershop, but started off renting a chair. Make sure that if you rent, the ground rules are clear, and set in place.  Some of the challenges, that presented itself, were related to the costs of haircuts, etc.  If the lady that owned the shop, wanted to run a special on haircuts, I had to honor it with my clients, and still be able to pay rent. Also, keeping your clients separate, when you have walk-ins. If someone is the owners' client, and as a walk in decides that you can do their hair, because the owner is too busy, hard feelings can occur.  Good luck with your decision!

From what I hear is if you have the finances to purchase a place, do it. But if you don't, leasing is not a bad idea since most businesses have to lease from someone. Good luck in your venture.

I think that when first starting you should definitely go booth rental if you feel comfortable being able to generate clients. If you can't or don't know how to market yourself, then going to one of those shops like Master Cuts or Super Cuts is the best way to have some income while you learn the game. They have traffic coming in and it will be enough to get yourself going in the beginning . The big thing I push is learning how to market yourself... I don't like stylists/barbers that just want to come in and sit and wait for walk in traffic. This to me is just laziness. If you paying booth rent then get off your a*s and get some of your own business. Don't just sit there leaching off my incoming traffic. That's my take!

Respectfully yours,

word of mouth marketing is the key in this game of haircutting.

Word of mouth is only one way of marketing, if you're only going to rely on that, it will take a while to get your weight up if you know what i mean. I"m not saying it's not a good way to get your name out there but you got to do more. Flyers, email, postcards... these are a few of the things that I recommend you do. I've even had a shop mentioned on the local radio... so how's that for word of mouth. I say think bigga! Holla!!

I just purchased a building after 18 years of leasing. I'm now in the process of rehabbing it for my salon. If I could go back and start all over, I would have purchased a building from the start. Eighteen years times $625 a month. Purchasing can be very expensive if you are looking at buildings that are in move-in condition. I was lucky to find a commercial build with a parking lot (very big plus) that use to be a salon that needs work for $20,000. Grand Opening Summer 2008, Rent FREE!!!!!!

Much Luck To You

Congratulations on the new building. Be sure to let us know how it goes and post some pictures too. We need to think bigger than renting places and start buying and save in the long run.
