What do you do when you leave a salon to open your own, and all of the employees suddenly want to come with you?

Make sure you weed out the bad APPLES!!!!!!!! If they have any bad habits, they are more than likely to bring them too. Don’t just count the dollars that they may bring as booth renters are commission workers. If you have worked with these stylist/barbers for a while you should no something about there work habits, attitude, skills, and customer service. Will they be an access to your business? YOU are now the BOSS a business owner. Friendship goes out the back door when you are running a business. Before you decide to take these other stylist/barbers with you make sure they will be an access to you and your business. I’ve been a salon owner for 18 years, I’m not talking fiction these are facts. BUSINESS IS BUSINESS.
The best of luck to you, and may your business be VERY PROPERIOUS.

Default Think about it - 05-02-2008, 05:47 PM

Well since you didn't give any reasons why all the employees want to work for you, i suggest you think about it b/c you would expect a little loyalty to the previous emplyr/boss. who's to say that the employees wont desert you when they feel like it.....I don't own a shop but i plan to one day. i go to barber college and my teacher gave me a few tips on starting out. he said alot of people bite off more then they can chew in as far as opening their first shop b/c people get these big places and spend alot of money on alot of chairs...light bill, gas bill, product....etc then they get barbers in the shops that don't have thier lisc. which you can be fined for.....they don't have loyaty, come in when they want to.....he suggested to start small with about 3-4 chairs and gradually build up b/c it could be times when you're the only one in the shop cutting.....my own little addendum is to go in with a partner and have a certain theme for your shop....i live in chicago and i see alot of barber/stylist shops and it's the same thing for the most part.....you go in the radio is loud, barbers have on dffrnt color jackets....some don't have on any, some LOOK like they NEED a barber. i have ideas that i can't wait to try for my shop......good luck to you dawg

Good point on the bad apples. You definitely don't want to bring over lazy, uncommitted workers who have bad habits just because yall were cool.

You know what? every response was greatly appreciated and they were all excellent. but you are correct 100% about not biting off more than you can chew or you could soon be looking at a grand closing. In my case my business will function even if there are no booth renters and its best to plan it that way. so that if ever someone or everyone decides to jump ship you can hold it down.
