TOW: What are your thoughts on people tipping you for your services? Ok, not ok? -
01-07-2008, 12:25 AM
This week's topic deals with the person who comes in, gets a really good style or haircut and does not feel compelled to leave a tip. For many, it is a slap in the face for others, its nothing that serious. How do you feel about it? How do you feel about it when it is one of your regular clients.....oooooooooh
Please give us your replies here.

Those tips -
01-07-2008, 11:30 PM
I believe that if there is something that you (the stylist/barber) is doing to them like no other then that client should always tip.

tip or no tip -
01-10-2008, 06:00 PM
If a regular client comes in and gets the best quality service you always give them, and they do not tip you.... then there is something very wrong in their personal life. if it becomes a consistant problem... your client has lost a great deal of respect for you and your work. thus, when they treat you as if you are not their regular stylist or barber... then you do the same with your prices to compensate for the difference. Hey, if they act like they doin't know you then.....need i say more?

I agree, as a patron of service it seems like a no brainer to tip especially if you are receiving great service.

If you aren't receiving those tips from regulars, maybe it is something that you are not doing right, I agree. Maybe you have to pick your game up to win over your regular client again.
Great posts!!

tipping -
01-11-2008, 09:33 AM
I think it is important to look at the person that is not tipping, and try to figure out why, they don't tip. Is it you personally, or is it just in general that they don't tip. I have some older clients that still believe that it is inappropriate to tip the owner of the business. I have heard this many times, and in fact when I was a young, it was something that my mother believed. Today, things have changed, and unfortunately the thought pattern of some of my clients have not. I just take it in stride, because if they are happy clients, they will bring me more clients, and perhaps, their friends will be better tippers. Some of my clients are really, really good tippers, so in the end it balances. I never take it personally. And as long as you are always doing your very best work, neither should you.

We provide a service!! -
01-11-2008, 01:18 PM
My feelings on this are strong, I believe that if you as a barber/stylist make the client look and feel good, then they shld tip. I am still in school, so we get to keep our tips and the cut is only $5. Myself, personally, can give you a cut that looks like a $20-$30 cut and folks still sometimes don't tip. Either they don't know or just don't care. And the thing that makes it soooo bad is we as students can't really complain, but when folks lv my chair they either always come back and ask for me or even ask for my personal #. So I guess they liked the service they received, right??? Oh well, I am jst waiting to graduate!!!

if it is to the customers satisfaction and he's a regular there should be a few extra dollars in it for the barber.

Great answers. there are a lot of things that go into whether a client tips or not, but as long as you give great service, the likelyhood of a tip increases greatly.

as someone meantioned, yah its good to think about their personal backgaround when they decide to tip or not. but there will always be those that are just to freakin cheap to tip. i had doctors and business owners as clients, and they seem to be the worst tippers. i cant say that about everyone, but thats just from my experience. same with people who weren't born in this country. its not always part of their culture to tip, and the believe that we get paid so much to do this job and not reliant on tips. so ive pretty much gotten to the point where i try not to expect a tip, and if i do get one, im the happiest person on earth.

On the whole tip thing I feel as though my service should be the same level no matter if the customer tips me or not. Sometimes there is a valid reason.. they ain't got it that day, they need it for busfare! I mean you never know what the reason is! Now if after a 2 or 3 visits and no tip, I feel like a friendly reminder " Hey, you know I'm workin' on tips right!" and that usually does the trick. I mean if you went on their job and forgot to pay the sales tax they would remind you, so it would come as no surprise to them if you mention this in a friendly manner. If after that they still don't then accept it for what it is, they just don't tip. I"ve had waitresses come back to the table and ask if I did something wrong if I didn't tip properly so as someone that is offering a service that expects gratification I think it's in our right to mention if we feel we were not fully appreciated. Take it for what it is worth!

I personally don't feel insulted if I'm not given a tip.I actually feel more insulted if someone gives me a dollar as opposed to nothing at all.I know in my own heart I do exceptional work. There are people who simply just don't tip.And for those clients I don't give a break on the pricing.I have a friend from HS who has been coming to me forever.I don't think she has ever given me a tip.Like someone else said there are customers who tip exceptionally well.So I just take it all in stride. Those tips add up though.I've been able to do some good things saving my tips.LOL!!!!
