Post Hairstyles replacing hats in Easter fashion - 04-15-2007, 08:54 PM

Easter finery is one expression of hope.

"In African-American churches, because church people traditionally didn't go out to clubs or venues like that around the city, the opportunity to dress up was Sunday morning and Easter was the big celebration," Rodney Howell, a Southfield hair salon owner and member of Greater Grace Temple in Detroit, said last week. "That has changed a lot over the years. A lot of women are getting away from wearing new hats. They're focusing more on wearing new hairstyles."

Especially hot for Easter this year at Howell's Hairshion Salon?

"Three-dimensional hair coloring," Howell said. "I'm doing Greater Grace's First Lady Crisette Ellis, and she's getting a darker brown color at the nape, then lighter brown as we go upwards with golden highlights at the very top."

And for Howell? "I like to celebrate Easter with new outfits." Last year, it was an emerald green Dolce & Gabbana silk-and-wool suit he bought in New York City, worn with green shoes and a blue ascot to match the silk suit lining.

This year, Howell was thinking of something white and made another trip to New York City, "but this weather we're having this week doesn't seem right for white, does it?"

So, Howell was undecided. "I'll watch the weather -- and I can hope," he said.

And, of course, that is what Easter is all about.
