Default The best ways to get funds to open a salon??? - 12-17-2006, 07:36 PM

From people that have opened a salon or barbershop or know some things about opening a salon, what was the best way to fund the opening of a salon? Do you get a small business loan?  Did you save up and if so, how much did you have to save up (Around how much).  Did you buy or lease a place?  Did the place you get already have equipment in it?   I am very interested in knowing

Good question.  I know a lot of young barbers and stylists really don't know the steps on opening their own spot.

I was able to use personal funds to purchase a equipment from a salon that was going out of business. I basically took over the existing lease.  It is somewhat difficult without a sufficient amount of start-up funds.  Things are going great but I am pretty much just keeping the doors open.  I have a full time job that I can't seem to get away from right now, which takes away from my available time at the salon.  I am also having a hard time finding someone to rent my additional booth to.

I too used personal funds to get my salon up and running.  I have a 2 booth salon.  1 booth is occupied by msyelf and the other is rented out.  I work outside the salon as well.  So therefore if  I can not make it to the salon on any given day and the booth renter does not come in my doors are not open.  In which I feel it hurts my business.  But the booth renter's rent is paying 90% of my lease.  Feel like I am caught in between a rock and a hard place.  I want to work in there as well as own it.

My salon is never open during the day, except for vacation time from my other job.  I also get more hang-ups on my answering machine then messages.  That being said, I'm too afraid the just quit the full-timejob to promote my business.  I'm pretty sure some of my cl ients are tired of waiting for me get to the salon in the later afternoon/evening!
